Sheep

At Builth Vets we can offer a wide range of services to ensure the health and welfare of your flock is kept to a high standard.

All of our mixed animal vets are experienced with sheep production and we have a number of vets with a specialist interest in this field. We are members of the Sheep Veterinary Society and actively keep up-to-date with current methods to ensure the most is being achieved from your flock.

  • We can spend time with you discussing the farming calendar and where we can implement changes that will improve production health and welfare. This is a vital tool for reducing losses and maximising productivity.

  • Lameness prevention and control is one of the most problematic and frustrating conditions a shepherd has to face. We are committed to working with you to achieve and maintain a sound flock.

Using the Five Point Plan, we can implement changes or adjustments which have positive outcomes.

Lameness clinics and audits can become part of the yearly calendar and all of our vets are happy to advise building on successful techniques used by other farms engaged in lameness control.

  • Examinations prior to breeding involves blood sampling ewes. It is important to ensure ewes have the correct levels of vitamins & minerals on board before going to the tup.

This is also the time to give tups an MOT and fertility test which requires one of our vets getting a semen sample using an electro-ejaculator. The sample will then be examined for motility using a microscope and stained to examine the morphology of the specimen.

We are also able to perform vasectomies of tups to produce a ‘teaser’ to aid in a tighter lambing period. This procedure should be carried out at least six weeks prior to tupping time.

  • At this stage, we can offer blood sampling a group of ewes to provide a metabolic profile that shows us if the energy requirements of the ewe are being matched by the nutrition provided.

  • At the end of lambing season we can quickly and efficiently perform investigations into lamb losses or disease outbreaks.

We can also work with you to investigate poor performance of lamb growth and aim to achieve good growth rates.

  • Post mortem examinations can be readily performed by our vets and we actively encourage farmers to use this service, as it is a valuable tool in preventative medicine.

  • We have invested heavily in equipment and can offer an in house worm egg count machine which can process samples rapidly. This tool is essential to ensure that wormers are used at the correct time, therefore, preventing anthelmintic resistance.

  • We are happy to test your flock and ensure that the paperwork needed to be accredited is completed and maintained.
